I started running three years ago after a long break from my high school and college running days. I stopped because the competitive pressure was overwhelming for me and I never got used to the fact that running is a series of good and bad days. Essentially I no longer had the courage to participate. In that time, I started my career as a microbiologist in the medical device industry, met my amazing husband Manny, and started a family. I now have two spunky, energetic, fun-loving children.

After a while I had deep regret for leaving running, even though I was no longer competing, I still felt defeated. For a long time I wanted to make a come back and my children were a great motivating factor. I wanted to show them how important it is to have a fulfilling life. Only after returning to running, I realized that sometimes just showing up means it is a "good day" and that it is not always about having a stellar performance. I am incredibly grateful for the good fortune in my life, and now, more than ever, my ability to run.

Upon my return to the running game I participated in a few short races and joined my local running club. I quickly became interested in the long race distances, the half marathon and marathon. There is something about pushing through a long run, depleted of energy, sore feet, stiff legs, and that constant inner voice telling you to stop. Some people call it crazy and although I agree, I believe, as a scientist, that it is more about courage; the courage to challenge oneself, to set a goal and risk failure to meet that goal. For me, the benefit outweighs the risk. That feeling of accomplishment is truly indescribable.

I have a great opportunity before me; on October 13, I will be running the 26.2 mile Bank of America Chicago Marathon! I am able to do this because I am helping to raise money for a charity that is meaningful to me, SALUTE INC. Earlier I mentioned my husband, Manny. Manny is a Post 9/11 Veteran and was part of Operation Enduring Freedom during Afghanistan and deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. We first met shortly after he left the US Marine Corp. My father, a Vietnam War Veteran, was drafted back in 1969 as part of the US Army. I know they both faced remarkable challenges and have been fortunate to live full lives. The challenges that these men and women face overseas and even after returning home takes immense courage, far beyond what it takes to tackle 26.2 miles. For me, it is an honor to help raise money for those who have not been as fortunate as my husband and my father and I am glad that through running, I can help make a difference.

Join me in supporting real change. Let's support good in the world and make a difference together. Help us provide a financial safety net for injured veterans and their families for SALUTE INC.

Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for SALUTE INC
