I have run the Chicago Marathon several times, always to fulfill a personal goal. Just to see if I could do it, to get a better time, to finish in a certain time. The last time I ran the marathon was in 2010. I wasn't sure if I wanted, or had it in me, to run another one...until Art George, a great person and Veteran silently suffering with PTSD, took his life earlier this year. I found myself thinking about him every time I ran and decided that I wanted to, had to, do something to help.
When I heard the news that this very close friend of my sister, Michelle Matthiesen, died, I was in disbelief as were so very many. Art George was a great person with a big smile and an even bigger heart. He touched and changed the lives of everyone he encountered. He was one of a kind, a gem.
Art George was also a combat Veteran who served in the United States Air Force, a veteran of Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He earned 6 medals for serving. Nobody can truly know or understand what he experienced and the sacrifices he and others made, except others who served with him or in similar conditions. And while the resources for Veterans may be better now than they were in the past, when it would have benefitted him the most, we have to do a better job supporting all Veterans, past and future.
